For this month's column, I have networked with
other DJs in the area and we made the top ten things not to do
to a bar DJ. These are not meant to scare anyone from talking
to us or from requesting songs from us, but just a list of the
few things that we have seen in our years of experience. Enjoy.
1. Do not say "Play Something Good".
What you consider good, might be bad and what you consider bad,
is probably great.
2. If the DJ is talking on the mic or is mixing or has
his headphones on, do not try talk to him, poke him in the back,
yell at him, or stick your finger in his face. This will only
make you wait longer.
3. Do not come up and ask for another request, while your
last request is playing. If you are not listening to your own
request, then your requests are not worth playing.
4. Do not sing your request to the DJ. The DJ has enough
background noise and cannot play Name That Tune.
5. Do not tell the DJ that "everyone will love this song".
The DJ doesn't so that theory is already blown.
6. There is no such thing as "black music" or
"white music". These terms are ignorant.
7. Do not ask to look through the DJs music, or to ask
to use his mic. The DJ is not coming to your office and looking
through your things.
8. If your request has not been played yet, do not send
your friends to ask for the same song. Do not yell the name of
the song at the DJ, and don't stare and gesture at the DJ all
night. You are no the only one making requests.
9. Do not ask for a song that was already played. If you
ask for a song that has already been played, make sure to come
earlier next time so you won't miss it.
10. Do not blame the DJ for your sex life and tell him
that you need a song to get laid. If a song is what you need,
then you better check your game.
11. Do not demand to hear your song next because you are
leaving. If you are going to leave whether the DJ plays your song
or not, what is the benefit to those staying?
