So
summer has come and gone once more and that
means another concert season has gone by. Let's
take a look bat at the shining musical moments
of the summer of 06
June
- Atmosphere @ Trocadero Theater - Philly.
My recent foray into underground (quality) hip-hop
lead me to this very packed, very Caucasian,
hip-hop show in the heart of Philly, at the
beautiful Trocadero Theater. The open acts were
Los Nativos and Brother Ali. Los Nativos were
hardly worth mentioning, but Brother Ali is
a notable albino rapper with a lot to say. But
the real entertainment of the night was Atmosphere.
They are a hip-hop duo comprised of Ant, the
DJ and Slug, the emcee. They have fierce beats
and Slug's flow is both lyrical and powerful.
Their song content ranges from broken hearts,
one night stands, addictions, and real tragedies.

- Brand New @ Webster Hall, New York
Perhaps the most moving night of the summer,
The Brand New show was a long time coming. After
having missed out on tickets to the first show
they played @ the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville,
NJ, there were a few panicked moments when I
thought I would miss out on this one too. They
don't make it out to the East Coast often. Having
gotten there and ignoring the opening act in
favor of good conversation and a couple Stoli-O
and Sprites, I was ready to rock. I also was
accompanied by a punk concert virgin, so I had
to show him a good time. The punk/MEO/rockers
put on an amazingly versatile show, ranging
from their deep heart felt ballads to their
upbeat old favorites from their first album;
YOUR FAVORITE WEAPON. Much time was spent in
the very young but very excited fun pit. It
was a sweaty but memorable night

- WARPED TOUR @ Englishtown, NJ
No summer is complete without attending the
Vans Warped Tour. Hey Vans, you should sponsor
gleny.com! Being a warped tour veteran, this
summer was no different. The Multitudes of Merch
stands from all the bands, the food vendors
and the plethora of colors of hair all make
up the all-day concert that I've come to call
home. Although impossible to check out all the
bands warped tour has to offer, I managed to
fin in several sets thou rout the day.
First
notable set of the day was Gym Class Heroes,
who mix emo with rap quite amazingly and they
have song content that is very attractive to
younger people (see Friend Request). Gogol Bordello
puts on something of a circus sideshow, the
used the microphone in a bucket as a percussion
at one point.
Thursday
was a very packed pit and it was about this
time that the soda bottles started flying. The
singer called it a 'garbage rainbow'. It was
unique and interesting until people started
getting hit in the face. - Not fun.
The
last act of my night was Rise against, who is
also my favorite band. Freshly on tour after
recording their new album - 'the sufferer and
the witness'. They really blew my socks off.
But they always do. Singing old favorites, new
chart-toppers and spurting a new Mohawk, Time
exceeded my expectations yet again. Look for
another review when I see them again in November.
